What must a fire extinguisher inspection log include?

For each extinguisher: an identifier and location, and for each monthly inspection the month, year, and initials of the inspector. Recording the result and any corrective action is strongly recommended.

How long should I keep the inspection log?

NFPA 10 §7.2.4.4 requires monthly inspection records to be kept for 12 months. OSHA 1910.157(e)(3) separately requires the annual maintenance record to be kept for one year. Many organizations keep three years to cover audit look-back periods.

Monthly check (initial only if ALL pass): in designated location · unobstructed and visible · gauge in green · pin and tamper seal intact · no damage, corrosion, or leakage · hose/nozzle clear · instructions legible, facing out · service tag within 12 months.

If any item fails: remove unit, hang equal-or-greater replacement, tag out, send for service, record here with date. Keep this log at least 12 months (NFPA 10 §7.2.4.4) — FireGuard recommends 3 years.
